Our Mission
The Adinkra Foundation aims at providing assistance on social, financial and
technical projects to selected clinics, communities and schools in Ghana (West
Africa) and especially with a focus on the Volta Region.De

What is Adinkra?

The Adinkra symbol
that we selected ('nkonson nkonson') stands for unity and human relations. Whether
we live in the Netherlands or in
Ghana, we are all connected to each other like the links on a chain, and
therefore we have to take care of each other.
The Adinkra Foundation has been founded on the 16th of June 2004 by Hans en Toinet van
Schijndel from De Mortel, a small village in the Netherlands. The foundation has
been established after Mrs. Van Schijndel, who is working in the Dutch health
sector, paid a visit to the Akatsi Health Centre, and was confronted there with
the harrowing situation of none or small health care facilities and no medical
equipment. Knowing from her own experience that in the Netherlands many
hospitals and health care institutions have excess material, she made the
promise to collect medical appliances and beds for this clinic.

What does Adinkra do?
The Adinkra Foundation has supported the clinics in the Akatsi District in
Ghana since 2004 by providing medical equipment (as instruments and beds), and
improving the drinking water supply at these clinics. Two sea containers full of
charity goods have been delivered to the clinics in the district so far. Thanks
to the Adinkra Foundation the health center in the town of Akatsi has been upgraded to
District Hospital. Every month 3,000
patients are attended to!

Next to the health sector, the Adinkra Foundation has also supported schools
and communities
in the Akatsi district by donating playground equipment, toys,
and clothing.
Even the local football team has received new shirts.
The Adinkra Foundation is supporting the extension works on the Akatsi District Hospital,
starting in 2009, by putting up a new structure for the maternity ward.
The
foundation was laid in 2009, walls were built in 2010 and in 2011 the roof was
put on the structure. The building works will continue until the maternity ward
can be fully used.
Furthermore we aim to donate an ambulance and ultra sound equipment to the hospital.
But we still need a lot of
support to be able to provide for all this.
